For the first time in over 10 years, a new 2D Mario game has been revealed. Showcased in a recent Nintendo Direct, Super Mario Bros. Wonder is a fresh take on 2D Mario that looks to bring back the classic side-scrolling platformer with a lot of twists.

Mario, Luigi, Toad, Peach, Daisy, and Yoshi are all playable characters and can be used in up to four player co-op. There are new power-ups, including one that turns Mario into an elephant. There seems to be a "dream world" theme that shines across the new style and art direction. The trailer (check it out below) showcases a lot of wacky new stuff like singing flowers, stretchy Goombas, and rolling Hippos.

This looks to be the freshest take on 2D Mario since Super Mario Bros. 2. And after 17 years of New Super Mario Bros., it's definitely a welcome deviation. The game will launch for Nintendo Switch on October 20, 2023.
