We received a lot of new information from the June 5 Pokemon Direct and the E3 2019 direct about Pokemon Sword and Shield versions. It's seems like it's about time to dive into everything we know about the pair of games so far.
In case you know knothing about the new games, Sword and Shield are brand new generation 8 entries in the series. Taking place in the Galar region, the three starters are Grookey, Scorbunny, and Sobble.
During the Pokemon Direct, we learned that the pair of games will release worldwide on November 15, 2019. One new mechanic is Dynamax, which is somewhat of a replacement for Mega Evolutions and Z-Moves. Pokemon turn giant and become more powerful, and this can only be done once per battle. Gym battles will take place in giant arenas and their Pokemon will Dynamax.
You can also take on Dynamaxed Wild Pokemon in what is known as a Max Raid Battle. You can have 3 other players join you to take on these powerful wild Pokemon. You'll then each have an opportunity to catch them. This is typically the only way these particular Pokemon can be obtained.
A little Galar Lore: Professor Magnolia is the professor in Galar, she has a grandaughter and assistant named Sonia. The champion of the region is called Leon, and he has a younger brother named Hop who will be your rival. Two of the gym leaders have been shown off: The Grass type Leader Milo and the Water type Leader Nessa.
There's a new Wild Area. Here, Pokemon roam the overwold, Let's Go style. Availability of Pokemon will change with time of day, location, and weather. These areas are vast and open world, with lots of terrain to explore.
On a rather dissapointing note, it was also revealed that there won't be a national dex in the generation 8 games, and that this is a permanent change moving forward. Game Freak claims that it isn't sustainable. There will be a Switch app that can be used to transfer Pokemon, but if the Pokemon isn't on the regional Pokedex, it can't be transferred to the game. This means it will be impossible to "catch 'em all" in Pokemon Sword and Shield.
