In a surprise Youtube trailer drop this morning, Nintendo revealed their next video game console: Nintendo Switch 2. As expected, this is a direct successor to the Nintendo Switch and bears a very close resemblance. It will be compatible with both physical and digital Nintendo Switch (1) games out of the box.
There are a few upgrades that are obvious from the trailer. The entire console, including the screen and Joy-Con, are larger. The Joy-Con will use a magnetic snap lock mechanism from the side, rather than the vertical slide rail. There are a few additional buttons on the Joy-Con, and what looks to be an optical sensor that will allow it to function as a mouse.
Only one game was teased: a new Mario Kart. It's not clear if this was footage from Mario Kart 9 (or whatever it might be called) or some kind of tech demo. But it was visually distinct from Mario Kart 8 and the footage took place on a new track. It also appears that there were starting lines on the track for up to 24 racers.
This surprise announcement was likely rushed and pushed up in response to recent hardware leaks, which appear to largely have been true. As such, limited information was revealed during the teaser. Instead it was announced that there will be a Nintendo Switch 2 Direct on April 2, 2025. This is likely when we can expect a launch date, price, and the reveal of some launch titles.
This is a very different reveal than we've seen for past consoles, but an exciting one nonetheless. It seems that Nintendo has opted for a very safe successor after the huge success of the Nintendo Switch (1). We'll have some more information for you after the Nintendo Direct in April, but for now enjoy the full teaser below.
