Nintendo Switch 2 Direct

Nintendo Switch 2 is here! Well, almost. It will actually launch on June 5, 2025 for an MSRP of $449.99. That's a bit sooner and a bit more expensive than most of us were anticipating. The Switch 2 Direct gave us all sorts of new details. Let's start with what comes in the box:

  • Nintendo Switch 2 console
  • Joy-Con 2 controllers (L blue + R red)
  • Joy-Con 2 Grip
  • Joy-Con 2 Straps
  • Nintendo Switch 2 Dock
  • Ultra High-Speed HDMI Cable
  • Nintendo Switch 2 AC Adapter
  • USB-C Charging Cable

Nintendo Switch 2 Mario Kart Bundle

In addition to the standard package above, there will be a $499.99 variant that comes bundled with a digital download code for Mario Kart World. Because the physical version of that game will retail for a whopping $80, that at least gets you some savings.

Nintendo Switch 2 Accessories

Much of what was showed about the system itself was already teased back in January, but we do have some more details:

  • A 7.9-inch LCD Screen, with 1080p resolution but no OLED. The system will be the same thickness as Switch 1.
  • Joy-Con 2 controllers attach magnetically from the side. They can be used as a mouse in addition to all the ways a Joy-Con could be used. $89.99 MSRP.
  • The Switch 2 Pro Controller will feel very familiar but looks to be slightly more ergonomic. It has an all matte finish with a metal top and larger bumpers. It also has two programmable buttons on the back of the controller grips and an audio jack. $79.99 MSRP.
  • Virtually all Switch 1 controllers, including Joy-Con and the Switch Pro controller, will be compatible with the Switch 2.
  • An additional USB-C port at the top of the console for accessories and easier charging in tabletop mode. A more sturdy adjustable stand for tabletop mode.
  • 256 GB of internal storage (compared to 32 GB on Switch). However, the only way to expand this storage is with Micro SD Express cards, a new and fairly expensive format.
  • The Switch 2 Dock has a built in fan. Switch 2 games are capable of up to 4k and 120 fps in docked mode.
  • The same Nintendo Switch Online subscription service will carry over to Switch 2. Gamecube games are also coming for Expansion Pack members.
  • A "C" button on the new controller opens up GameChat. This allows you to live chat with a camera feed (seperate accessory) with up to 3 other players online. There is a free trial period until March 2026, and you will need Nintendo Switch Online afteward.

We also got some details about how backwards compatibility will work with Switch 2. The vast majority of Switch 1 games can be played on Switch 2 in their original form (no upgrades) for free. There are several games that will get free performance enhancements when played on Switch 2. Then there are Nintendo Switch 2 Edition upgrade packs, which are paid upgrades to games that usually feature new content in addition to performance upgrades.

That's pretty much all we know about Switch 2 for now, but you can also check out the full overview trailer below.
